Our Story

Janina Tauro and Lauren Lavoie are licensed therapists, who created Holistic Psychotherapy in 2014, a group private practice offering therapy to adults, and specifically people healing from trauma as it relates to maternal mental health in New Haven.

Their work began with rapid community responses to families immediately impacted by trauma such as violence, cycles of abuse, and complex mental health challenges.

After years of working within the New Haven community, they created Holistic Psychotherapy - with intention, and a purpose that was more aligned to supporting people in their healing journey. Being a witness to all of the pain and injustice, and especially understanding how the maternal mental health epidemic in the Black and Brown community is a direct result of white supremacy, changes your perspective on life, and in how we show up to
healing work as therapists.

Holistic Psychotherapy started by offering individual therapy, accepting insurance payments, introducing mindfulness and expressive art groups into the community, moms groups and other affinity groups, adding trauma-trained clinicians to the group, supervision consultations to other clinicians in the community, and trauma training opportunities to local organizations.

Along with their therapy services, they continue to collaborate with a local and eclectic group of medical professionals and peers- an integrative approach has been essential; after all, practicing trauma work for close to 15 years is not easy.

They moved from one teeny office to another, landing them into a large and accommodating space in New Haven…that later kicked them right into telehealth-mode-only in 2020.

Holistic Psychotherapy is a collective group of therapists where a healing practice is nourished.

They serve lots of different people - but predominantly providing services to Black and Brown mothers who have experienced trauma.

And specifically womxn who are open to

a healing journey- one that leaves
room to be creative,
and be curious about
the different needs in each person.

Our core beliefs in care work, in healing work, for people,
tells us to respond to trauma with:
